Made the light but durable Sugi wood (Japanese cedar) and reinforced with iron straps and fitted with hand carved wooden handles or iron handles. See photos for details. Used as a unit (1 masu) this bucket was a standard unit used by rice stores throughout Japan in from the Edo ear into the Taisho era. The bucket held about 18 liters, or pounds of rice.
