Red against stark darkness, and I knew immediately I had to try it. I chose Chinese Ink over black watercolour deliberately. There is a depth and velvety warmth to it that ordinary black cannot hold. It does not just sit on the paper. It pulls at something. On the small piece of paper, it worked. As the ink met the almost dry red petals, the colours moved
