They are silver plated, although the plating has worn away in several places, exposing the dark steel beneath. The heel bands are much finer and thinner than those seen on later spurs (please see the image that compares them to a ictorian spur by Maxwell)There are hooks or spikes at the end of each arm which wrap around the heel of the boot.
